Our Story

The Meteor: Coffee and Bikes

The Meteor opened its first cafe in Little Rock in June 2017 with a complete renovation of a historic 1897 building.  The Meteor's Instagram and Facebook pages showcase the brand's fresh, refined aesthetic. Our cafe offers specialty coffee drinks, a selection of beer and wine, house-made baked goods, and a full menu of ingredient-driven food options. Our bike shop offers a boutique retail environment that sells a curated selection of bikes, accessories, and Meteor-branded soft goods. We intentionally choose every product we carry, and we are dedicated to serving experienced cyclists, newcomers, commuters, cruisers, or anyone else who rides a bike.

The Meteor sponsors four elite-level race teams: Meteor x GiordanaThe Meteor // IntelligentsiaThe Meteor, and Leborne Women's Racing.

The Meteor's Founders

The Meteor was founded in 2016 by partners Doug Zell and Chris St. Peter.  Doug Zell is also the founder of Intelligentsia Coffee, one of the most important players in the coffee industry (more on them below).  Chris St. Peter is a lawyer who was previously with a large international law firm, then a small patent litigation firm, before making the leap to a business owner-operator.

Doug and Chris are both avid cyclists and close friends, largely through their shared love of the sport.  Before founding The Meteor, Doug and Chris often wondered why there were a dearth of beautiful retail environments that combined truly great coffee and bikes -- two cultures that compliment each other -- so they started a concept of their own: The Meteor.

Intelligentsia Coffee: The Meteor's Heritage

The Meteor exclusively serves Intelligentsia coffee and tea products.  Although Intelligentsia and The Meteor are separate companies, they share a common heritage, vision, and aesthetic.

Doug Zell co-founded Intelligentsia in Chicago in 1995.  The company now has 17 locations in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Watertown (MA).  Intelligentsia is considered a leader of the modern, "third wave" coffee movement, and is often referred to as one of the three most important coffee companies in the world (along with Starbucks and Peet's).  The company routinely wins local, national, and international "best of" awards.

If you browse the Intelligentsia website, you'll notice that each Intelligentsia location, while distinct from every other location, is a beacon of retail design.  Doug is highly involved in the site selection and design of each location, and he is the driving force behind the brand's refined aesthetic, which has clearly carried over to The Meteor. This aesthetic will be demonstrated as The Meteor rolls out future locations in select markets across the country.

Stay tuned.
